We are just six months away from opening two new schools- Brilla Pax and Brilla Caritas Elementary Schools! We are thrilled to share that we have signed a lease for a 68,000 square-foot building which formerly housed the St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. Construction is well underway to prepare for 180 Brilla kindergarteners in the August. We are deeply grateful to three generous supporters who have helped to finance the building renovations.
Gerstner Philanthropies contributed a $750,000 grant to support building renovations. Since inception in 1989, Gerstner Philanthropies has made over $100 million in grants, predominantly supporting biomedical research, educational opportunities for low-income students, and social service organizations. Their education grants aim to support students who have talent and determination but whose opportunity to excel is limited because of their economic circumstances. They chose to support Brilla’s expansion because they believe “Brilla’s efforts to educate their students’ character uniquely prepares their students to excel in all areas of their lives.” We at Brilla Public Charter Schools are profoundly grateful for Gerstner Philanthropies’ partnership and support of our expansion. Civic Buildings provided an $11.2 million loan for building renovations through the Facilities Investment Fund. The Facilities Investment Fund provides low-interest loans to schools seeking to finance construction. For more information about the Facilities Investment Fund, read here.
The Charter School Growth Fund lent $600,000 through the CSGF Facility Fund. The CSGF Facility Fund provides short-term, flexible loans at a low interest rate to help charter schools solve challenges related to facilities financing. For more information about the Facility Fund, read here.
We are delighted to be able to offer a Brilla education to more families and are very grateful to those who are making it possible.
