The morning the scores landed, our hallways buzzed: Brilla posted the highest ELA gains in the city—an 18% increase overall. That means far more readers meeting the bar, more writers stretching their voices, and more scholars stepping into this year with confidence. Math is building momentum, too, and our grade‑level snapshots tell a powerful story of growth.
Zoom in and you’ll see why we’re smiling: 5th‑grade ELA grew 33 percentage points across the network, and 4th‑grade ELA grew 22 percentage points. In math, 8th grade leapt 17 points year over year, the biggest jump in our network, and 4th‑grade math rose 8 points across our schools. These are not just numbers—they’re proof that focused practice, strong curriculum, and steady coaching are paying off.

Now meet a few classroom stars. At BVM, Ms. Lilyana Diaz’s 7th‑grade ELA class reached 88% proficiency—a soaring finish. In Ms. Lenaya Sharp’s 5th‑grade math class at BVM, 100% of students met proficiency. And at BCPE, 3rd‑grade math posted the highest math growth network‑wide—up 23 points— led by labsite teacher Ms. AAliya Hayes, whose joyful, precise lessons helped kids click into problem‑solving mode.

Whole‑school teams powered this surge, too. BPE earned the highest ELA growth—up 27 points— thanks to the leadership of Shingi Mutasa and his team: Tiana Waller, Paige McDermott, Stephanie Pepen, and so many others. BCPE notched an 11‑point increase in math, guided by Denise McCrummen and the BCPE leadership team—Erica Pagan, Cavel Whyte, Kristen Cala, and so many others—who kept instruction tight and progress visible.
And our after-school tutoring program? It’s working. Students who participated showed 12% higher ELA proficiency and 17% higher math proficiency than peers who declined. Running 6–7 weeks before state exams with sessions one weekday and one Saturday, it was so effective that we’re inviting more students to join this year.

Here in the Bronx, hope is something you can see: a child tackling a tough paragraph, a student sticking with a problem until the answer clicks, a family walking through our doors again tomorrow. These results are more than scores; they’re a signal that brilliance lives here—in our neighborhoods, in our classrooms, and in our children. With your partnership, Brilla won’t just rise—it will shine.
