At Brilla Schools, we believe every child deserves access to a rigorous, joyful, and inclusive education. Brilla Veritas Elementary (BVE) is a powerful example of that belief in action. Through strategic shifts, a strong team culture, and an unwavering commitment to holistic student support, BVE has created a special education program that is yielding real, measurable growth for students. We spoke with Darianella Baret, Assistant Principal of Student Services, to learn more about what’s driving their success.
A Culture of Collaboration and Growth
At the heart of BVE’s student services model is a supportive, collaborative culture rooted in a shared growth mindset. The team works with a clear commitment to each student’s academic and social-emotional success. Open communication, solution-focused teamwork, and shared accountability among staff ensure that no student falls through the cracks. Every adult in the building sees themselves as responsible for the progress of our special education students. That shift has made a powerful difference.

Strategic Shifts That Made an Impact
This year, the BVE team made several key changes that deepened the effectiveness of their Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). They redesigned intervention groups to be more specific and intentional, and emphasized a holistic view of each student. A core improvement was the consistent triangulation of data—blending academic, behavioral, and observational insights to drive more accurate and tailored interventions.
The team also instituted regular self-audits to ensure compliance and improve the quality of services. Authentic data gathering became a hallmark of the work, enabling timely adjustments and stronger alignment between student needs and supports.
Stories of Transformation
These systems and mindsets translate into real growth for students. One second-grade student, who began the year fully dependent on adult support and frequently exhibited challenging behaviors, is now thriving. With consistent family engagement, social-emotional coaching, and positive reinforcement, the student became increasingly independent—and ended the year as the recipient of the Math Growth Award.
Another powerful example is a first-grade newcomer who entered BVE struggling with isolation. Through MLL and MTSS support, this student grew into a confident, engaged member of the classroom community, a transformation made possible by purposeful collaboration across the student services team.

Looking Ahead: Deepening and Expanding
As BVE looks to the future, their focus remains on refining differentiation strategies and strengthening co-teaching models. The team is committed to serving diverse learners even more effectively, both in small groups and general education classrooms. BVE wants to keep prioritizing collaboration while getting sharper in how it serves students with unique needs.
Why It Matters
The story of Brilla Veritas Elementary is not just a spotlight—it’s a roadmap. Through intentional practices, aligned systems, and a culture of growth, the BVE student services team is ensuring that all children—regardless of their starting point—can thrive.
We celebrate their work and the powerful example they offer to our network and beyond.
