At Brilla, family engagement is not merely a part of the educational experience; it is central to our mission. We believe that meaningful relationships and dedicated support are essential. Brilla collaborates with families to help ensure students excel academically, socially, and emotionally both inside and outside our school. This commitment reflects our belief that parents are the first educators of their children.

This quarter, The Perch had the privilege of speaking with Cristina and Miguel Guadalupe, proud parents of Christian (16) – a Brilla alumnus now attending a prestigious boarding school in Pennsylvania) and David (10) – a vibrant 5th grader at Brilla College Prep Middle School. The Guadalupe family’s journey with Brilla showcases how deep connections and community care make a lasting difference.
When asked to share their favorite Brilla memories, Cristina beamed as she recounted her son Christian’s determination to earn the “Student of the Week” award during his time at Brilla.

“Christian was so eager to arrive at school early each day, convinced that punctuality would win him the award,” she laughed. “Mrs. Valle explained it wasn’t just about being on time; other qualities mattered too. The day he finally earned it, he ran to her, saying, ‘Mrs. Valle, I did it, I won the Student of the Week!’ He was so proud.”
The Guadalupes also fondly remembered Brilla’s creative “Challenge of the Week” activities. “One week, the challenge was to create something from 25 recycled items,” Cristina shared. “Our whole family joined in to build a robot with cereal for eyes. Christian won that challenge, and we were thrilled!”
For Cristina and Miguel, Brilla’s care has always extended beyond the classroom. “During the pandemic, the school supported us in ways we’ll never forget,” Cristina said. “Mrs. Valle arranged for us to receive groceries weekly, and Ms. Wagner and Mrs. Claudio checked in constantly with us, they sent our kids board games so that they could be entertained. They even asked if we needed help with rent. Brilla’s support was a lifeline when my husband lost his job for three months.”

“Together, us and the school, we work as a team to give our children the best foundation and opportunities to grow and succeed in all aspects of their lives.”
The family also values Brilla’s ongoing parent engagement initiatives, such as Parent University and Coffee and Conversations. “We’ve always been very involved with the school’s activities and the teachers. We believe education begins at home, and Brilla understands that partnership,” Miguel said. “Together, us and the school, we work as a team to give our children the best foundation and opportunities to grow and succeed in all aspects of their lives.”
Christian’s success story showcases Brilla’s dedication to supporting students even after they leave. With guidance from staff like Ms. Wagner, Christian enrolled in the Oliver Scholars program, which prepared him for acceptance to a top-tier boarding school. “The teachers helped him balance his Brilla homework with Oliver Scholar’s Program projects,” Cristina said. “He earned a full scholarship and even the Founder’s Scholarship, given to just one student annually.”

David, now in 5th grade, is already benefiting from Brilla’s focus on future opportunities. “Ms. Santos is helping us explore middle and high school programs that align with David’s interests,” Cristina shared. “He’s very creative—he won the 2023 talent show and the Artist of the Year award. Brilla nurtures his unique talents while encouraging him to dream big.”
When asked what sets Brilla apart, Cristina didn’t hesitate: “Brilla doesn’t just focus on academics; they prepare students for life beyond school. They push them to explore the world and discover opportunities. Brilla believes in every child’s potential to shine.”
To families considering Brilla, Miguel offered heartfelt advice: “Don’t miss the chance to be part of this community. Work with the school, get involved, and trust the process. Together, you’ll create a bright future for your child.”
The Guadalupe family’s journey with Brilla is a shining example of what happens when schools and families work hand-in-hand. Through intentional care, creative programs, and tenacious support, Brilla continues to fulfill its mission: to nurture children who will lead lives of wisdom, virtue, and service.
As Cristina beautifully summarized, “Brilla doesn’t hold children back. They push them forward, they want them to access opportunities that are out there, they help them shine wherever they go.”
